Indian Railways is also in the process to launch the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, which is a sleeper-class version of it, for long and medium-distance travel.

Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, are essentially a longer distance and overnight version of the Vande Bharat Express trainset, and as of now, they're are under production and trials.

They have advanced features such as automatic doors, ultra comfortable berths, on board WiFi, and an aircraft-like design. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set completed its Long Distance Trail earlier this year in February 2025.

As of December 2024, 10 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains were under production and the manufacturing of 200 Vande Bharat Sleeper Rakes was awarded to Technology partners.

As per an earlier report by the Ministry of Railways, the demand for specialised train services during peak periods had increased significantly by 54% compared to the previous year, reaching to 57,169 services.

Indian Railways had announced earlier this year in February 2025 that 200 new Vande Bharat trains, 100 Amrit Bharat trains, 50 Namo Bharat rapid rail and 17,500 general non AC coaches are planned and expected to be launched in the next 2 to 3 years.

LHB coaches in other trains

For providing better travel experience and safety in their trains, Indian Railways has been producing only LHB coaches from April 2018 onwards. LHB coaches are technologically superior with features like anti-climbing arrangement, air suspension with failure indication system, and less corrosive shell.

An LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coach is a modern type of passenger coach in Indian Railways trains, which was developed by Germany's Linke-Hofmann-Busch (now part of Alstom) and being produced in India. It is designed for higher speeds up to 160 kmph, increased safety, and greater passenger comfort compared to older ICF coaches.

LHB coaches feature anti-telescopic and anti-climbing designs, disc brakes, and better suspension. The weight of LHB coaches is lesser when compared to older ICF coaches. LHB coaches are also longer than the older coaches, and hence have higher number of passengers per coach. The first LHB coach in Indian Railways network ran in December 2003.

Economical, affordable transportation

Indian Railways provides affordable transportation to over 720 Crore passengers in India, and its fares are among the lowest in the world.

As per a report by the Ministry of Railways earlier this year on April 2025, Indian Railways provides train tickets with subsidised prices, with an average concession of 46% to every person travelling on its trains. That is, if the cost of providing service is Rs. 100, then the price of ticket is Rs. 54 only.

This subsidy continues for all passengers. Also, concessions beyond this subsidy amount are continuing for many categories of train travellers such as: 4 categories of Persons with disabilities (Divyangjans), 11 categories of patients and 8 categories of students.

Despite the heavy subsidies on passenger fares, it still gained a Net Profit of ₹3,260 Crore during 2023-24. While it provides large concessions on passenger fares, it earns through its freight or goods transportation services.

This way, Indian Railways successfully provides affordable services to the masses as well as continues to increasingly provide new advanced modern train services such as Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, Namo Bharat, as well as better LHB coaches in other trains.

And in addition to that, they're improving the facilities and amenities at Railway Stations across India under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, where more than 1,300 railway stations across the country are being redeveloped.
