The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully launched the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) based Barrier-less Tolling System across selected tolled stretches of National Highways in India.

The first MLFF tolling system in India was launched at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, earlier this year in May 2026, followed by the next one at Mundka Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi, and the next one was launched just 5 days ago on 20 June 2026 at Daulatpura Toll Plaza on the Delhi-Jaipur Section of NH-48.

Continuing the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling System rollout at more sections of National Highways, it rolled out the this barrier-less toll system at Gharaunda Toll Plaza on the Panipat–Jalandhar section of National Highway-44, today on 25 June 2026.

MLFF tolling system is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve travel time, enhance fuel efficiency and lower vehicular emissions along the National Highways of India. The NHAI plans to roll out this advanced barrier-less system along more stretches across National Highways in India, in the coming days.

Here's what you need to know about the Barrier-less Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System (MLFF), its features, and how to check and clear the e-Notices for any missed payments.

What is Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Barrier-less Tolling?

The MLFF tolling framework uses barrier-less tolling technology with minimal human intervention that enables vehicles to pass through toll locations without stopping, thus ensuring a seamless traffic flow.

It uses advanced Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) technology, high-performance sensors and cameras mounted on overhead gantries to automatically identify vehicles and deduct the toll fees through FASTag, thus allowing uninterrupted speedy travel at the highways.

This system uses advanced technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag-based electronic toll collection to enable automated and contactless tolling operations.

In the existing toll plaza system, you have to slow down your vehicle or stop or idle in front of the scanning cameras at the toll booths that scan your vehicle's FASTag.

In case of the advanced Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling, you just keep moving through the highway as usual and the high-tech overhead sensors and cameras will do their work by quickly reading your number plate and FASTag without you needing to slow down or stop your vehicle.

Its main benefits are:

  • Zero Waiting Time - The elimination of physical toll barriers ensures smooth and uninterrupted movement of vehicles, reducing travel delays and congestion at tolling points.
  • Savings in Fuel and Travel Time - By removing the need for repeated braking, slowing down, idling, and acceleration at the toll plazas, the MLFF system helps reduce fuel consumption and enables faster journey times.

NHAI Advisory for National Highway Users

The NHAI advises all highway users to:

  • Maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts at all times.
  • Ensure that FASTags remain active and properly affixed on vehicle windshields.
  • Use clear and compliant High Security Registration Plates (HSRP).
  • Adhere to traffic discipline and follow signage within the MLFF zones.

The NHAI suggests to use a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) for your vehicle, if you haven't already. New vehicles manufactured on or after April 1, 2019, already come pre-fitted with High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in India. HSRP number plates have a unique laser-etched serial number that can be read by the ANPR-enabled cameras.

What is e-Notice and how to check and clear them

What is e-Notice Mechanism for Unsuccessful Toll Payments?

An e-Notice will be served in cases where toll payments are not successfully processed through FASTag, including cases of insufficient balance in FASTag account, inactive tags, or tag-related issues.

Summary about E-Notice

  • When you may get an e-notice? If your vehicle crossed a MLFF toll plaza but the toll was not paid via your vehicle's FASTag
  • If not paid within 72 hours from the issue of E-Notice, you'll be charged double the payment
  • You can pay within 72 hours to avoid double charges
  • You can Check and pay via the official portal on https://nhfeenotice.parivahan.gov.in
  • You may raise grievances, if any, within 72 hours of issuance of an E-Notice on the official portal

How to Check and Manage e-Notices?

You can verify and manage e-Notices through the designated NIC portal : https://nhfeenotice.parivahan.gov.in - the official NHAI Barrier-less Tolling eNotice & Grievance Portal, or in short, the MLFF e-Notice portal.

You can access the portal's services by entering their vehicle registration number and authenticating through a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to the mobile number registered in the VAHAN database. e-Notice can also be viewed on Rajmargyatra Mobile App.

The MLFF e-Notice portal can be used to make payments and submit representation for e-Notices.

To login, use your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN). OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked to your VRN in the VAHAN database. To Update your mobile number in the VAHAN database, use the following link: https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/mobileupdate/

If your payment is pending, stuck or deducted from your account, you can check the “Payment Status” button on the dashboard next to the relevant e-Notice.

What's the Payment Timeline for e-Notices?

You can pay the fee of an e-Notice within 72 hours from the time of issuance of e-notice to avoid paying double the user fee.

  • Payment within 72 Hours: User fee payable at the normal applicable toll rate (1x).
  • Payment after 72 Hours: User fee payable at twice the applicable toll rate (2x), as per prescribed provisions.

Non-payment of E-Notices may result in blacklisting of FASTag and restriction of other vehicle-related services through the VAHAN platform.

Grievance Redressal for e-Notice

Grievances regarding e-Notice may be raised within 72 hours from the time of issuance of e-notice. No grievance can be raised by user after 72 hours.

In case a you believe that an e-Notice has been issued to you incorrectly, a grievance may be submitted through the aforementioned NIC portal https://nhfeenotice.parivahan.gov.in within 72 hours of issuance, for review and resolution.

Features of the MLFF Tolling System and Zones

Gantry-Based Toll Collection: The toll or user fees are automatically collected through overhead gantries that are installed across the highway corridors. The structures provide a minimum vertical clearance of approximately 5.5 to 6.0 metres, to ensure unhindered movement of all permitted vehicles.

Decongested Tolling Zones - To maintain smooth traffic flow and operational efficiency, strict enforcement measures are implemented to prevent parking, encroachments, and unauthorised stoppages within 200 metres on either side of the MLFF tolling zone.

Robust Enforcement Mechanism - Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) and local enforcement agencies will actively monitor MLFF stretches to prevent violations such as wrong-side driving, number plate tampering and toll evasion.
