The complete Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS Corridor is now opened, which has Meerut Metro rail service integrated within the same elevated rail network infrastructure. Namo Bharat trains between Delhi and Meerut, as well as Meerut Metro trains, are set to begin.

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has inaugurated India's first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and dedicated the 82-km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor to the nation, today on 22 February 2026.

Here's more about the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro train, and the difference between them and the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains between Ahmedabad-Bhuj and Jaynagar-Patna

Namo Bharat RRTS is a semi-high-speed regional transit service. Constructed and opened in phases from 2003 onwards, the first 17-kilometres long priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot was opened on October 20, 2023, marking the launch of India's first regional rapid rail service.

Today on 22 February 2026, the 82 kilometres long fully completed Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS Corridor is now inaugurated and opened for rail travel. With it inauguration, it is now set to provide a speedy travel between Delhi and Meerut in just 59 minutes.

Namo Bharat RRTS is now fully operational on the route from Sarai Kale Khan to Modipuram, covering the entire Delhi–Meerut corridor, providing a speedy and comfortable mass transit travel.

With a design speed of 180 kilometres per hour (kmph), the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat is India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

It will provide faster, smoother, more convenient and comfortable travel between major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut and connect them with the national capital Delhi.

The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS is designed for 180 kmph top speed, with a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph and an average speed of around 90 kmph. There will be a 6 coach Namo Bharat RRTS train running in every 10 minutes in this 82 kilometres long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS section.

Sarai Kale Khan, the originating station of the corridor, is one of the four Namo Bharat stations to be commissioned with this inauguration. It is strategically located as a major multi-modal hub, seamlessly connecting Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road. The other Namo Bharat stations - Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram - are in Meerut.

Not to be confused with Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains that are inter-city trains with a train set similar to Vande Bharat (See differences below).

The Meerut Metro is currently India’s fastest metro railway, designed for 135 kmph top speed and a maximum operational speed of 120 kmph. The Meerut Metro will currently be 3 coach trains and they can travel its 23 kilometres stretch in just 30 minutes.

Both the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Rapid Rail / RRTS and the Meerut Metro will operate on the same infrastructure of shared tracks and stations, which is a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

Similarly, the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS is also integrated with different lines of Delhi Metro at stations such as Sarai Kale Khan, New Ashok Nagar, Anand Vihar, and Ghaziabad.

That is, the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS will operate on the same station and on the same tracks as those Metro trains of Delhi Metro and Meerut Metro. Which means that travellers will be able to travel within Delhi or Meerut city on the Metro trains as well as catch a Namo Bharat RRTS from the same Metro station where both these trains are available.

Difference between Namo Bharat RRTS and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail

While both are "rapid rail" trains called Namo Bharat and run between cities, they're not exactly the same kind of trains.

The Namo Bharat RRTS trains in the Delhi-Meerut Corridor (in Delhi/NCR, which includes Meerut in Uttar Pradesh) operates on dedicated, elevated/underground tracks, operating similar to a high-speed Metro. The Namo Bharat RRTS is a Regional Rapid Transit System implemented and run by National Capital Region Transport Corporation Ltd.

As you can see in the above pictures, the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS and the Meerut Metro, standing next to each other on the same elevated tracks network, have similar size and build to be able to operate on the same set of railway tracks on this shared corridor. The track size on this corridor network is the Standard Gauge of 1,435 mm.

Note that these are different from the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains (earlier referred to as Vande Metro) implemented and run by Indian Railways that are a short-distance inter-city rail service that operates connects major cities within a distance of around 100–250 kilometres.

As you can see, it resembles Vande Bharat trains in size and shape, and runs on the same broad gauge tracks. Photo by Arjun Arvind, CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains are inter-city trains that run on existing Indian Railways tracks, unlike the Namo Bharat RRTS that run on a dedicated regional transit corridor.

The broad gauge Indian Railways tracks on which Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains run are 1,676 mm (5 feet 6 inch) wide tracks that are wider than the standard gauge of 1,435 mm (4 feet 8½ inch) wide tracks of the Namo Bharat RRTS corridor. That is, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains are of the same size as the typical broad gauge trains in India, while the Namo Bharat RRTS trains are less wider in comparison.

The train sets and coaches are different, both in size as well as on the interior and exteriors, with the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains looking similar to the Vande Bharat trains, and the Namo Bharat RRTS trains having a different kind of train set and coaches with size and looks that resemble Metro trains, as they run on the same railway tracks and through the same stations as the Metro trains.

Two of the currently existing Namo Bharat Rapid Rail train services are : Ahmedabad-Bhuj Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Train and Jaynagar-Patna Namo Bharat Rapid Rail.
