Namo Bharat RRTS is a semi-high-speed regional transit service. Constructed and opened in phases from 2003 onwards, the first 17-kilometres long priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot was opened on October 20, 2023, marking the launch of India's first regional rapid rail service.

Today on 22 February 2026, the 82 kilometres long fully completed Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS Corridor is now inaugurated and opened for rail travel. With it inauguration, it is now set to provide a speedy travel between Delhi and Meerut in just 59 minutes.

With a design speed of 180 kilometres per hour (kmph), the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat is India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). It will provide faster, smoother, more convenient and comfortable travel between major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut and connect them with the national capital Delhi.

The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS is designed for 180 kmph top speed, with a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph and an average speed of around 90 kmph. There will be a 6 coach Namo Bharat RRTS train running in every 10 minutes in this 82 kilometres long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS section.

Sarai Kale Khan, the originating station of the corridor, is one of the four Namo Bharat stations to be commissioned with this inauguration. It is strategically located as a major multi-modal hub, seamlessly connecting Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road. The other three more Namo Bharat stations - Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram - are in Meerut.

Not to be confused with Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains that are inter-city trains with a train set similar to Vande Bharat (See differences below).

The Meerut Metro rail section inaugurated today has 12 metro rail stations, which are : Meerut South, Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmpuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, Begumpul, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, and Modipuram

Both the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Rapid Rail / RRTS and the Meerut Metro will operate on the same infrastructure of shared tracks and stations, which is a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

Similarly, the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS is also integrated with different lines of Delhi Metro at stations such as Sarai Kale Khan, New Ashok Nagar, Anand Vihar, and Ghaziabad.

That is, the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS will operate on the same station and on the same tracks as those Metro trains of Delhi Metro and Meerut Metro. Which means that travellers will be able to travel within Delhi or Meerut city on the Metro trains as well as catch a Namo Bharat RRTS from the same Metro station where both these trains are available.

Difference between Namo Bharat RRTS and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail

The Namo Bharat RRTS trains in the Delhi-Meerut Corridor (in Delhi/NCR, which includes Meerut in Uttar Pradesh) operates on dedicated, elevated/underground tracks, operating similar to a high-speed Metro. This Namo Bharat RRTS is a Regional Rapid Transit System implemented and run by National Capital Region Transport Corporation Ltd.

Note that these are different from the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains (also referred to as Vande Metro) implemented and run by Indian Railways that are a short-distance inter-city rail service that operates connects major cities within a distance of around 100–250 kilometres.

As they have similar names, it may lead to confusion, but Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains are inter-city trains that run on existing Indian Railways tracks, unlike the Namo Bharat RRTS that run on a dedicated regional transit corridor. Even the train set and coaches are different, with Namo Bharat Rapid Rail trains looking similar to the Vande Bharat trains.

Two of the currently existing Namo Bharat Rapid Rail train services are : Ahmedabad-Bhuj Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Train and Jaynagar-Patna Namo Bharat Rapid Rail.
