Indian Railways to install CCTV Cameras in all 74,000 Coaches (bogies) and 15,000 Locomotives (engines) of Indian Railways to provider better safety for its railway passengers.
Every Coach of Indian Railways to be equipped with 4 CCTV Cameras, and its Locomotives with 6 Cameras.
Also, a High-Quality CCTV Footage to be ensured even at High Speeds of above 100 kilometres per hour and also in Low Light Conditions.

Going by the positive results of experimental installations of CCTV cameras in passenger coaches, Indian Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras in all coaches. With this, Indian Railways aims to significantly improve passenger safety.
This is great news for train travellers, as there are cases of miscreants and organised gangs who exploit gullible passengers. With CCTV cameras, aims to significantly reduce such incidents.
The CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors, for preserving privacy of train passengers. Here are some details about them.
CCTV footage to provide a 360-degree comprehensive coverage. Indian Railway officials have informed that successful trials have been done in the loco engines and coaches of the Northern Railway. The Union Minister for Railways has given the go ahead for installing CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos of Indian Railways.
Each railway coach to be covered with 4 dome type CCTV cameras, where 2 cameras will be in each entrance way. Each locomotive will have 6 CCTV cameras, where 1 camera each to be at the front, rear, and on both sides of the locomotive. Each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with 1 dome CCTV camera and 2 desk mounted microphones.
Indian Railway officials shared that the CCTV cameras will have the latest specifications and will be STQC certified. The Union Minister for Railways has emphasised on deploying the best-in-class equipment. He urged the railway officials to ensure that high quality footage should be available even for trains running at 100 km/h plus speeds and also under low lighting conditions.
The Union Minister for Railways also encouraged the officials to explore the use of AI on the data captured by CCTV cameras, in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission.
The purpose of fitting the CCTV cameras in the common movement areas of coaches is for improving safety and security of train passengers. Their aim is to help identify miscreants, while preserving passenger privacy.
As per the announcement, these modernisation efforts of Indian Railways are a reflection of its commitment towards a safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel experience.

As per the announcement, the progress of the installation of CCTV Cameras in locomotives and coaches was reviewed by the Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Union Minister of State for Railways Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, in a meeting held yesterday on Saturday 12th July, 2025.
