This new railway line has brought Mizoram's capital city Aizawl on India's railway map for the first time. Here are the details of this new railway line and the new passenger train services that have begun to run on it.
About Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line

Built at a cost of over ₹8,070 crores, the new Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Line Railway connects Aizawl, the capital of the North-eastern state of Mizoram, to the rest of India by railway.
This scenic route covers 51.38 Kilometres in this hilly lush green mountainous region with tough terrain, crossing picturesque lush green hills, valleys, and rivers.
This newly completed engineering marvel contains a total of 45 tunnels, 144 bridges, and 11 railway overbridges plus underbridges. The total length of tunnels in this route is 12.853 Kilometres.

On this Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line, there are 55 major bridges. The Bridge No. 144 is the tallest one on this railway line, which stands at a height of 114 metres from its base, which is 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar. On this route, the Bridge No. 97, named as Pualhrang Bridge, is over 724 metres long.

This 51.38 km new line between Bhairabi and Sairang is divided into four sections, namely Bhairabi–Hortoki, Hortoki–Kawnpui, Kawnpui–Mualkhang and Mualkhang–Sairang.
Despite many challenges like lesser working seasons due to heavy and prolonged monsoons, tough and hilly terrain through deep forests, poor accessibility, non-availability of construction materials and skilled labour etc., Northeast Frontier Railway and Indian Railways has now completed the project.

On this new Bairabi - Sairang railway line, the first trial run to Sairang near Aizawl was done on 1st May 2025. Officially commissioned by the Ministry of Railways in India on 15th July 2025, regular train services to Sairang has begun for the first time today, on the 13th of September 2025.

This new railway line aims to provide enhanced connectivity to the people of Mizoram, help grow small scale industries in the area, and boost tourism in the state. It is also expected to substantially reduce travelling or transportation costs to this hilly state.

Mizoram got it's first railway connection in the late 1980s in the form of a Metre-Gauge railway line, with the Bairabi railway station near the Assam border.
This metre-gauge railway line was upgraded to broad gauge in 2016, with the completion of the 83.55 km Kathakal - Bairabi Gauge Conversion Project. The ongoing 223 kilometre long Sairang–Hbicchhuah project aims to extend the railway tracks to Mizoram’s southern border.

Coming back to the newly opened Bhairabi–Sairang new rail line, this will significantly reduce travel time between the capital of Mizoram and nearby places of Assam and also provide long distance access across India by rail.
