Indian Railways to soon allow change in train boarding point up to 30 minutes before departure, upgrade your travel class up to 30 mins before departure, and cancellation of counter tickets to be allowed from any railway station across India, as a part of its new reforms to improve passenger convenience.

It was also announced that the ticket cancellation time windows for Indian Railways trains are increased to 72, 24, and 8 hours before departure, to curb last-minute speculative bookings and misuse of Tatkal system by touts, and to help secure tickets for genuine train travellers at no extra cost.

The Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced today on 24 March 2026 that five new reforms are approved in line with Indian Railways’ resolve to undertake reforms during this year in 2026.

Among all the reforms announced today, some of them are for providing better convenience to railway passengers, as per which, you will soon be able to change your Train Boarding Station up to 30 minutes before departure, and some measures to curb misuse of ticketing systems and improve access for genuine railway travellers, such as, the earlier cancellation time windows of 48, 12, and 4 hours before departure has been now revised to 72, 24, and 8 hours before departure.

In addition to that you will soon be able to cancel counter tickets from any railway station across India, removing the earlier restriction of cancellation only at the originating station.

Also, you can now upgrade your travel class up to 30 minutes before departure, as per the new reforms. Here are the full details below.

Change the train boarding point up to 30 mins before departure

The Union Minister said that passengers of Indian Railways can soon be able to change their boarding station digitally up to 30 minutes before departure of the train from its origin station.

Earlier, you could change the boarding point only before chart preparation. Under the newly reformed provision, if a you're unable to board from the original station, you may select the next convenient station and board the train without losing your confirmed seat.

Upgrade your travel class up to 30 mins before departure

In another measure for better passenger experience, you can now upgrade your travel class up to 30 minutes before departure, whereas earlier changes were restricted to before chart preparation.

Ticket cancellation time windows increased

The Union Minister has also announced reforms that aims for better passenger convenience, with measures to improve access for genuine travellers by curbing misuse of ticketing systems.

To curb ticket black marketing and misuse of the Tatkal system, the earlier cancellation time windows of 48, 12, and 4 hours before departure have been now revised to 72, 24, and 8 hours before departure, aligned with the advance preparation of reservation charts, which now happens 9-18 hours before departure instead of 4 hours. And this will be done at no extra cost from passengers.

Advance reservation charts improves passenger convenience by reducing uncertainty, enabling better planning for waitlisted travellers, and supporting passengers from remote locations.

Early charting allows alternative travel arrangements, optimises vacant berth utilisation, and boosts transparency. These changes are aimed at removing incentives for last-minute speculative bookings and ensuring tickets are available to genuine passengers.

Counter tickets can be cancelled from any railway station across India

The Union Minister also announced that soon counter tickets can now be cancelled from any railway station across the country, removing the earlier restriction of cancellation only at the originating station.

He also said that the requirement of filing a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) for e-tickets has been removed, and refunds will now be processed automatically upon cancellation.

The Union Minister said that these reforms are expected to further improve transparency, reduce misuse, and enhance passenger experience in railway ticketing.

He said that ticket black marketing and misuse of the Tatkal system had been a major concern. To address this, the Indian Railways has introduced technology to detect bots and fraudulent software. Further technological interventions curtailed the ability of agents and touts to book tickets immediately after the Tatkal window opens, alongside the introduction of Aadhaar-based OTP verification.

A detailed data analysis has led to the identification and removal of nearly 3 crore fake accounts from the IRCTC system, resulting in a significant improvement in ticket availability.

Previous reforms have included Reforms for Better On-Board Services on Indian Railways trains, such as, the on-board cleaning services for general and unreserved coaches that have been taken up as a mission. For this, a total of 86 trains have been identified across zonal railways.

Apart from these reforms for enhancing passenger convenience, other reforms were also announced that are aimed at improving operational efficiency, and encouraging innovation in the railway sector, such as, improving quality of construction and cargo transportation in Indian Railways.
